Media versions

Media files are represented by versions. Any modifications you make to media versions such as metadata or image edits will not modify the original file; the changes are recorded in the library.

A media version belongs to a single box, but it can be part of any number of albums for viewing.

Making new versions

You can make multiple versions for a single media file, each with their own image adjustments and metadata. For example, if you have a photo with a potato and a muffin, you can make a version that’s cropped to show just the potato, and another version that’s cropped to show the muffin. Each version can have separate keywords and ratings.

To make a new media version, select an existing one and use either the Media > New Version from Original or Media > Duplicate Version menu command. Using Duplicate Version will copy the selected item’s edits to the new media version.

RAW+JPEG/HEIF

When you import items into the library, you can choose to combine photos captured using a camera’s RAW+JPEG mode (or RAW+HEIF) into a single media version. You can switch a version’s file between its RAW and JPEG/HEIF originals using the Media menu.

Deleting versions

To remove items from the library, drag them to the trash, and then use the Musebox > Empty Library Trash menu command.

Deleting files

If all versions that represent a file are trashed, when you empty the trash Musebox will show an alert asking if you want to move the original files to the Finder’s trash.
